Your goals will be very personal and may not be easy to articulate initially, so use the questions to help guide your reflection.

Here are some ideas for you that other learners have shared with me. You may really identify with some of these.

Ask yourself these questions:

Why am I learning French?

  • I travel to France regularly and want to be able to ask for items in shops and order meals in restaurants.

  • I loved French at school and want to start learning again and focus on speaking French.

  • I need to keep my brain going!

  • I want to do an activity where I can meet people and communicate with others.

What do I need to improve?

  • My listening skills – I find it really hard to pick out words – it all sounds like one long sentence!

  • My speaking skills – I get very nervous and forget all my vocabulary.

  • My pronunciation – I try so hard in France but I can never make myself understood and I would like to improve

What do I already feel confident with?

  • I feel very confident reading information – I can usually get the gist of things.

  • I feel confident talking about myself and my family.

  • I feel confident in shops when asking for things and I can even understand prices!

What would I love to be able to do in 3, 6 and 12 months’ time?

  • I would love to be able to ask my French neighbour about their family and talk about the weather, their beautiful garden, recipes etc…

  • I would love to go on holiday and be able to ask for everything at the hotel in French!

  • I would love to take the lead in a speaking activity in my class and not feel worried about making a mistake.
